There is more construction underway in Winnipeg this year than in the three years previous, according to the Winnipeg Construction Association.
Ron Hambley, executive vice-president with the Association, said more than 20 cranes are currently active in Winnipeg, contributing to more than $2 billion of infrastructure and other projects expected to be completed in 2012.
That’s roughly what was completed in the three previous years combined and there’s no sign that the pace activity is going to slow any time soon, Hambley said.
For example, demolition of several downtown buildings got underway a couple of months ago as part of the much-anticipated Sports Hospitality and Entertainment District, a $600-million project that will rebuild 11 downtown blocks.
"We expected it to slow down a couple of years ago but it just never did. We continue to see the work coming out. Typically, when we communicate with the design community, they'll tell us if things are slowing down. They're working on [projects] that we won't see for a year-and-a-half," he said.
