Three-and-a-half years after the Winnipeg Arena was demolished, the most sought-after retail space in Winnipeg finally has an anchor tenant.

T&T Supermarket Inc., an Asian supermarket chain based in Vancouver, has signed on to build a 45,000-square-foot facility at Polo North, a 210,000-square-foot site just a stone's throw from the city's biggest and most popular mall, Polo Park Shopping Centre.

Finding an anchor tenant was expected to be a breeze but the economic downturn two years ago put a serious crimp in negotiations with major retailers.

The Corus Entertainment network had previously agreed to move its three local radio properties, CJOB 680 AM, the city's most-listened to station, as well as Power 97 FM and Groove 99.1 FM, to Polo North.

John Pearson, broker/developer with Shindico Realty Inc., said he's optimistic demand for the rest of the available space will accelerate now that T&T is on board.

The Polo North land was formerly the Winnipeg Arena, where the Winnipeg Jets used to play.
