Winnipeggers will get to experience the good, the rad and the gnarly when the newest addition to the city's retail scene throws open its doors in December.

Hollister Co., a California-based casual- and surf-wear shop, has signed on to open a 6,000-square-foot store at Polo Park Shopping Centre just in time for the pre-Christmas rush.

Company spokeswoman Iska Hain described Hollister, which sells T-shirts, sweatshirts, sweats and jeans, as representing a "laid-back lifestyle."

"It's all-American, effortlessly cool," she said, noting Hollister already has seven stores across Canada and more than 600 around the world.

Instead of targeting men and women, like most retailers do, Hollister goes after "Dudes" and "Bettys" in the 15-to-40-year-old age bracket.

Hollister's arrival means Winnipeg's biggest mall, at 1.2 million square feet, is 99 per cent full. It has only one significant opening, the 20,000-square-foot space vacated by McNally Robinson Booksellers earlier this year.

It's been a good year for finding new tenants at Polo Park. Earlier this summer, Forever 21 and BCBGMAXAZRIA, two other California-based companies, announced they would open later this year or in early 2011 in the former home of Canada Safeway.
