Steinbach vaulted past both Thompson and Portage la Prairie to take a firm grip on the third-biggest city in the province with a population of 13,524, a more than 22 per cent gain since the previous census five years ago.
Much of the credit for Steinbach's population boom in the southeast part of Manitoba goes to the Provincial Nominee Program, an initiative that facilitates immigration from other countries to the province.
The new residents, surveys show, have come from as far away as Germany, Russia and the Philippines.
