The second largest city in Saskatchewan will soon call for bids from private planners and consultants who can help the city map out a 240-acre development in the city’s northern downtown.
The site is currently an industrial area, home to railways and Saskatoon’s city storage yards. The city council estimates that proper development could create homes for about 6,000 people and an estimated five million square feet of commercial space over a 15 to 20 year build out.
A city report states, "Development in this area is inherently sustainable, due to its central location, access to transit, workplaces, post-secondary institutions and existing service infrastructure. There is potential to create a vibrant mixed-use neighbourhood within easy walking distance to the downtown, the University of Saskatchewan, SIAST and City Hospital."
The city has earmarked $500,000 for private consultancy on the massive project.
