Saskatchewan posted strong growth in non-residential construction activity in the second quarter of 2012, with a 6 per cent increase from the first quarter - the highest percentage gain among the provinces and well ahead of the 1.8 per cent increase nationally.
Non-residential construction in the province totalled $426 million (seasonally adjusted) in the second quarter, the highest on record for that period, according to Statistics Canada.
Non-residential construction was also up year-over-year, increasing 21.4 per cent over the second quarter of 2011 - the second-highest growth rate in the nation. Saskatoon had the second-highest increase among major Canadian cities, up 34.4 per cent to $177 million from $131 million during the same period last year.
Regina's non-residential construction activity of $105 million in the second quarter was down 4.3 per cent from $110 million in the second quarter in 2011.
