When 201 Portage loses its title as the tallest skyscraper in Winnipeg in 2017, there won't be any need for a measurement.
That's because the $200 million, mixed-use skyscraper, which is in the works by Fortress Real Developments Inc. and Mady Development Corp., is scheduled to hit 55 storeys - 22 levels higher than 201 Portage.
The Ontario-based developers announced last month that their main building is now expected to reach 46 storeys, which is four more than when the project was first announced in the spring. On top of that, they plan to add a nine-storey crown that will house a residents' lounge and other amenities.
Plans for the Graham Avenue property also include bringing in a national grocer to open a 25,000-square-foot full-service grocery story on the second floor, which will attempt to fill one of downtown Winnipeg's biggest needs.
The building will be mixed use, including office and commercial space and 36 floors of condos. A sales office is expected to open in early 2014, with construction starting later that year or early 2015 with a mid-2017 grand opening.
This massive construction project is the latest in a growing line of skyline-changing developments to hit Winnipeg in recent years.
The massive new Manitoba Hydro building opened a couple of years ago and the $600 million sports, hospitality and entertainment district, named SHED, is well underway
