Museum reaches major milestone

One of the largest and most influential construction projects in Winnipeg's history has hit a major milestone.

One of the largest and most influential construction projects in Winnipeg's history has hit a major milestone.

The last pane of glass on the Canadian Museum for Human Rights has been put in place, signalling the end of the outside work of the $351 million project.

The glass piece was the last of 1,669 unique panes installed.

Now efforts will turn to finishing the inside, including the spaces for the museum's many exhibits. Stuart Murray, the museum's president and CEO, said a much-anticipated grand-opening date will be set in the not-too-distant future.

"We know it's 2014. We're going to get that down to the day and a month, and we should probably know that early in 2013," he said.

What has been billed as "Winnipeg's Guggenheim" - in reference to the museum in Bilbao, Spain, that attracts 850,000 people annually - could add more than $75 million to Manitoba's annual gross domestic product through spending in restaurants, hotels and retail outlets, according to some predictions.
