MET given new lease on life

One of downtown Winnipeg's long-shuttered heritage buildings is about to undergo a renaissance.

One of downtown Winnipeg's long-shuttered heritage buildings is about to undergo a renaissance.

The Metropolitan Theatre, affectionately known as the "Met" during its nearly 70-year-run as a movie house, finally has financial commitments that could see it reopen in as little as two years. It has sat empty since 1987.

The city and the province have agreed to contribute $1.5 million each toward a $16 million conversion into a "multi-function event space" that will be known as the Metropolitan Entertainment Centre

The plan is for the 1,000-seat venue to host events as diverse as high-school graduations, cabaret-style concerts, classic movies and Winnipeg Jets away games.
