The provincial government has been in contact with the Manitoba Funeral Services Association (MFSA) about charging funeral homes a new fee. The money raised would be used to fund an inspector, who would monitor the industry and ensure transgressions are penalized.

Owen McKenzie, president of the MFSA, says funeral homes will likely be charged a licence fee per death that they handle by the province. They will, in turn, pass the fee onto the family of the deceased.

"The province doesn't have the appetite to call it a death tax," he said.
