Economic Development Winnipeg Inc. is today (October 21) wrapping up a recruitment mission to Buenos Aires, Argentina, on behalf of high-growth local tech companies.

The group said in a media release that the city’s burgeoning technology firms are having a challenging time finding talent, and that employee retention is also an issue because there is so much competition between companies for experienced professionals. Participating local companies are Bold CommerceESLlibrary.comFarmers Edge and Online Business Systems.

The mission in Argentina’s capital is part of a $1.8 million, three-year program that involves all three levels of government, with Western Economic Diversification Canada providing 38 per cent of the funding, announced in August 2019.

Additional financial support is provided by the Government of Manitoba, which is working closely with EDW as part of its Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program, which allows skilled workers to settle in the province as permanent residents.

EDW said the mission was advertised in Buenos Aires in hope of attracting qualified candidates, and that more than 2,000 resumes expressing interest in these Winnipeg-based positions have been received by interested professionals.

“Winnipeg is a multicultural city that is well-positioned to welcome top talent from around the world,” said Dayna Spiring, president and CEO of EDW. “We want to show qualified tech professionals in other countries how rewarding a career in Winnipeg can be and the many advantages of living here, while helping local companies meet a challenge they regularly face.”

Chantal Grindle, chief HR officer at participating company Bold Commerce, said, "International recruitment has brought us great success not only in finding top talent, but adding diversity in skillset, ideas, perspective and culture to our team. We're looking forward to exploring Argentina's vibrant tech scene, while building on the fantastic one growing right here in Winnipeg.”
