Five-storey housing project pitched for site near Trout Lake

Proposed building would feature 80 units; 20 per cent targeted to 'moderate' incomes

The City of Vancouver is considering another purpose-built rental housing project, this time in the Kensington-Cedar Cottage neighbourhood.
 
Carscadden Stokes McDonald Architects has filed a rezoning application under the city’s Moderate Income Rental Housing Pilot Program for an 80-unit, five-storey rental building for a site at 1990 to 1956 Stainsbury Ave. near Victoria Drive.
 
The pilot program, which is limited to 20 projects around the city, requires at least 20 per cent of the units to be reserved for moderate income households, which is defined as households earning between $30,000 and $80,000 annually.
 
Four single-family homes, built between 1945 and 1961, currently sit on the assembled land. The site also includes an adjoining City of Vancouver lane.
 
The proposal notes that the site is a 10-minute walk from Nanaimo SkyTrain station, near major bus routes and close to Trout Lake Community Centre and Lord Selkirk elementary.
 
The building, whose design aims to meet Passive House standards, would feature a mix of studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom units.
 
An open house runs from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Croatian Cultural Centre May 15.
