B.C.'s 46 ski resorts have seen a drop in average overnight rental revenue, with income falling sharply last season and little recovery expected this winter, according to a BC Stats survey.

The survey looked at almost 500 rental properties at B.C. ski resorts from November to April during the 2008-09 season. It found that room revenue fell 18 per cent on average, a drop of $8 daily in revenue per available room to just above $37 for the season.

An upside to the study is that summer rental income has increased 20 per cent over the past five years as more resorts began to expand summer activities, such as mountain biking.

However, total overnight rentals declined 5.1 per cent last season across the province, and the study said a change in the type of ski visitor does not bode well for resort rental accommodation this year. The biggest increase is coming from day visitors, mostly locals, who do not require accommodation, BC Stats found.
