The Hudson Bay Mountain Resort at Smithers is on its way to becoming the premier ski hill in Northern B.C., according to Gary Mathieson, CEO of Quay Property Management Corp. of North Vancouver, which is stickhandling the expansion.
The company took over Hudson Bay in 2010 and it also owns Skeena Cat Skiing in nearby Hazelton.
Mathiieson said a ski-in, ski-out residential enclave is being laid out at the base of Hudson Bay Resort’s Mountain, which attracted 3,500 visitors to its opening on the December 1 weekend.
“We get up to 45,000 skiers each season,” he said, “drawn by the best powder skiing in B.C. It’s not like that slushy stuff down south.”
He added that there is potential synchronicity with the Skeena Cat operation t to expand the Hudson Bay skiing experience.
The first 10,000-square-foot building lots are being offered at Hudson Bay, where one can ski right from the slopes into downtown Smithers.
The 10 lots in the first phase started at $149,000 and have sold out. There will be a total of 30 lots, which can each hold two detached houses, released over three phases. A heads-up to investors: there is no time limit on building, or on how many lots can be purchased by a single buyer.
Mathieson said there is also opportunity for retail investors and for a hotel operator in the Hudson Bay village, which currently has a small store, rental equipment facilities and a day lodge with a popular restaurant and pub.
