Ontario-based grocery giant Loblaw will soon request a building permit for a 122,692-square-foot Superstore at the southeast corner of 24th Avenue and 160th Street in South Surrey. A Superstore Gas Bar is also proposed on the site.
“Loblaw has not yet applied for building permits for either the Superstore building or the gas bar, but we understand the application will be made,” a spokesman for the City of Surrey told Western Investor.
In a curt email response, Loblaw Companies Ltd. said, “There is currently no information to share regarding the development at this location.”
Local realtors and other observers say the new Superstore will niche into “a centre ice” retail destination in South Surrey’s Grandview Corners where Walmart, Home Depot and Future Shop are already in and U.S-based Target is aiming to open.
There is also an application for a new mixed retail and office development of nearly 300,000 square feet just south of Grandview Corners at the corner of 20th Avenue and Croyden Drive, according to the City of Surrey.
The new permits will add to a frenetic construction pace which has seen South Surrey building permits eclipse the Surrey Central area this year for the first time since 2010. In the first eight months of 2012, total permit values in South Surrey reached $31.7 million, compared to $10.5 million in the Central District, according to the City of Surrey.
South Surrey is also leading in residential construction, with 699 new homes starting this year in the area, compared to 585 in Central Surrey. Since 2009, 2,837 new homes have been started or completed in South Surrey, nearly twice the pace of Surrey's Central district.
