The occupation of a vacant old rental apartment building in Burnaby by housing advocates came to an end with arrests and sparked a street march against what activists call “demovictions.”

Dozens of people turned out to a rally organized by the Alliance Against Displacement in the Metrotown area protest.

As the group marched, they stopped at buildings and sites that have either been demolished already or are facing demolition in the future.

The rally was part of an ongoing battle between housing advocates and city hall over the issue. Protestors claim the demolitions are removing affordable rental apartments.

Earlier, a group from Alliance Against Displacement began occupying a vacant building slated for demolition. That occupation ended with three arrests but no charges.

The group called for Burnaby to put a moratorium on all demolitions of older rental buildings in the Metrotown area. The group urged people who face future evictions to refuse to leave.
