Growth potential in suburban Sherwood Park, just east of Edmonton in Strathcona County, got a boost in May when work started on a new $23 million transit terminal on Bethel Drive.

The bus terminal/transportation hub will anchor inter-municipal service between the county and Edmonton, and boast more than 1,200 parking stalls and an enclosed climate-controlled passenger platform area with access to off-street bus parking with capacity for up to 20 buses at a time.

The terminal, to be paid for mostly with $13.6 million in GreenTRIP grant funding from the province, will make it easier for commuters to move quickly between Edmonton and its neighbour.

Building activity is also picking up in another of Edmonton's suburban neighbours, with the City of St. Albert trumpeting a much healthier first third of the year.

The northwest Edmonton suburb recorded $17.9 million in new commercial building approvals for the first quarter, noting that amount was up from only $530,000 for the same period in 2012.
