Calgary developers are facing a new legislative requirement as of June 19.

That's the date the city picked to start requiring public protection site safety plans for all construction sites involving major construction, demolition or façade work on buildings that are five storeys or more in height.

"These plans are intended to increase public safety around construction sites at all times," said Marco Civitarese, the City of Calgary's chief building inspector.

Civitarese added that the city has worked closely with the development industry to determine plan requirements and a review process that will affect most major projects.

Calgary has seen its share of building construction mishaps in the past several years, including one tragedy in 2009 where materials that were blown off of an under-construction downtown highrise building killed a three-year-old girl and injured her father and brother.u
