Residents oppose new Calgary malls

While Calgary appears to have a shopping mall for every resident, more retail development on the western fringe of Calgary appears destined to go ahead, despite the fact some Springbank residents are opposed to any expansion of commercial space.
While Calgary appears to have a shopping mall for every resident, more retail development on the western fringe of Calgary appears destined to go ahead, despite the fact some Springbank residents are opposed to any expansion of commercial space.
It has even led to some in the Springbank community to muse that their area should consider separating from Rocky View, the jurisdiction that surrounds much of Calgary on its west, north and east sides, and is home to intense commercial development such as the Cross Iron Mills mega mall at Balzac.
The latest project moving ahead is known as Bingham Crossing, and while its developer, Rencor Developments, has cut its proposed size to 62 acres of a parcel of more than 300 acres, many in the Springbank community — a traditional acreage enclave and lower density subdivisions — remain opposed to something that they fear will generate more traffic in their neighbourhood.
Bingham Crossing, if it ultimately survives the development permitting stage, would include what Rencor calls high quality shops in a rural alternative for commercial development. It will also include a significant seniors housing component.
Rocky View was also in the news early in November with concerns raised about growing demand for policing in the Balzac area, due to commercial growth.
