Marriot starts $36M luxury hotel in Edmonton

Canada's biggest hotelier is bullish on Alberta's future despite perceptions of a cooling economy

Marriott International has decided to forge ahead with a $36 million luxury hotel in Edmonton’s ICE District, despite perceptions of a cooling economy in Alberta’s capital.

Expected to open in late 2018, and located in the heart of Canada’s largest mixed-use sports and entertainment district, the property is one of the most significant hotel developments in Edmonton in more than three decades. The JW Marriott Edmonton was chosen to replace the former Delta Hotel when Marriott International acquired Delta Hotels and Resorts in 2015.

The biggest hotelier in the country is bullish on Alberta’s future.

"In many respects, for those who have got boldness and vision, this is probably exactly the time to act,” said JW Marriott president Arnie Sorenson.

“The new JW Marriott property will provide guests with enriching luxury in the heart of downtown Edmonton,” said Don Cleary, president, Marriott Hotels of Canada, adding “it speaks to our confidence in this incredible venture.”

JW Marriott Edmonton will feature 356 rooms and suites, more than 25,000 square feet of state-of-the-art meeting and conference space and one of the city’s largest ballrooms at over 10,000 square feet. The hotel will also feature a luxurious spa, and a premium restaurant, according to Marriott.

“We are thrilled to partner with Marriott and proud to bring the iconic JW Marriott Hotels & Resorts brand to ICE District, and open the first hotel of its name in Alberta,,” said Daryl Katz, chairman of the Katz Group, which is developing the ICE District.
