Lethbridge opposes urban drilling

Lethbridge may eventually reap the benefits of increased oil and gas exploration in southern Alberta, but the city doesn't want oilpatch complications for its development sector.

City council made that clear in November, when it moved to formally signal that it doesn't want oil and gas production taking place within its urban boundaries.

Council's opposition to oilpatch production within city limits was voiced in a resolution that states the city is opposed to such activity out of concern for the negative implications for future development of urban land, including the additional costs associated with continuing to build safe communities.

The city doesn't oppose oilpatch expansion beyond its own boundaries.
