The City of Grande Prairie will proceed with annexation of more than 15,000 acres from the surrounding county of the same name, despite the fact mediation with its neighbour hasn't solved all points of disagreement.

"We were pleased with the mediated discussions held with the county," said Grande Prairie Mayor Bill Given, who added the dialogue was positive but did not allow the two neighbours to agree on all issues that arose with the land agreement.

On the upside, the two municipalities agreed on what lands should be annexed back in 2010.

The city, northwest Alberta's largest service centre, will now proceed with its application to annex about 15,567 acres (6,300 hectares) of land.

"Raw land is needed to accommodate opportunities for new industrial and commercial development," Given said.
