The 17th annual Calgary Real Estate Forum, held October 27 at the Telus Convention Centre, marks the first time that the city’s entire commercial real estate sector has met since the price of oil began its plunge a year ago.
The Forum will focus on “the challenges facing asset managers, brokers, corporate real estate executives, developers, investors, and other professionals … active in real estate,” according to Forum chairman Greg Guatto, president and CEO of Aspen Properties.
One of the key questions is what effect the oil downturn will have on out-of-province investors. An expert developer panel will discuss why they buying in Calgary what they see as the future of out-of-province investors. The panel includes Eric Carlson, CEO of B.C.-based Anthem Properties and officials from GWL Realty Advisors, KingSett Capital and Wexford Developments.
An expert panel will also look at Calgary’s industrial real estate market, with a discussion on whether distribution demand, lower operating costs and higher exports can overcome exposure to the energy sector. The moderator is Jon Mook, executive vice-president, industrial, with Barclay Street Real Estate.
An outlook for Calgary real estate, including market liquidity, interest rate trends, consumer debt levels, energy prices, rate of inflation and crude oil prices, will be covered in a report from Todd Hirsch, chief economist with ATB Financial.
