B.C.’s northwest region of Prince Rupert and Port Edwards is home to one of northern B.C.’s biggest economic drivers – the Prince Rupert Port Authority. One in four jobs in Prince Rupert are linked to port activity, according to an InterVistas Consulting economic impact study, as reported on by Business in Vancouver. The report states that $35 billion worth of goods flowed in and out of the port’s terminals in 2016, generating $1 billion in economic activity, about one-quarter of which was wages for workers. Terminal expansion plans have led to record-levels of shipping volume of 24.1 million tonnes in 2017. Building permits in Prince Rupert have more than doubled from 2016 to 2017, while The District of Port Edward has a large inventory of developable commercial and residential land to address the expansion needs of industry and communities alike.
